World Tourism Day 27 September 2024

World Tourism Day was established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in 1980. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of tourism and its impact on the global economy, cultural exchange, and environmental sustainability. Each year, World Tourism Day has a different theme and for this year the theme is "Tourism and Peace"

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General Message For World Tourism Day:

·         Tourism brings people together.

·         On this World Tourism Day, we reflect on the profound connection between tourism and peace.

·         Sustainable tourism can transform communities – creating jobs, fostering inclusion and strengthening local economies.

·         By valuing and preserving cultural and natural heritage, it can help reduce tensions and nurture peaceful coexistence.

·         Tourism can also promote economic interdependence between neighbours, encouraging cooperation and peaceful development.

·         At the same time, tourism broadens horizons. Every traveller can be an ambassador, engaging respectfully with local populations, recognizing our diversity and shared humanity, and the values that unite us all.

·         As we celebrate tourism, let us travel responsibly, build bridges, and promote mutual respect among cultures and nations.

·         Together, we can harness the power of tourism to advance peace and prosperity for all.

Travel Broadens The Mind

As the prosperity in the world has improved there are many millions of people who travel to see the many wonders the world offers both natural and man-made. The beauty of each is in the eye of the beholder.

May books and travel magazines will list many of these wonders and I am fortunate to have seen a few namely Mount Everest, Machu Picchu, Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, Leaning Tower of Pisa. Eiffel Tower, Panama Canal. Stonehenge. Great Pyramid of Giza.

My personal favourite countries are South Africa, Switzerland and Thailand. If one wishes to understand the meaning of life visit India, a Living Museum, which I have started to visit annually for 3 months

Most humorous moment on holiday – At the night market in Chang Mai outside a T shirt stall a group of Chinese tourists were enjoying a hearty laugh. I went to see what the fun was about and it happened to be a “T shirt showing a man seating on a toilet seat and the word DOWNLOADING”.   Needless to say I had a broad smile on my face.

Travel Jokes

·         I didn’t understand what is terminal illness until I got to the airport.

·         When I first felt ready to travel I mentioned to my wife that I wanted to see the world. The next day she bought me a World Atlas.

“You find a good bit of nature and you want to share it. You want others to experience your delight, for their delight will double your own. I am sure we all know that feeling – Simon Barnes
