THOUGHT A DAY GITA (TAD)

Let me Say…

I have found it difficult to study a chapter of the Bhagvad Gita every morning. Sometimes not even a portion of it. Somehow, the daily hustle of living made it impossible. Ever if I studied a few Shloks after a while l had forgotten them. Later, I came across the Bhagavad Gita arranged in daily readings, here also there was too much to remember.

I found a small booklet on Gitajji by Kaka Kalelkar (an ardent companion of Gandhiji) in which he gives in his own words the impression the reading of the Gitaji created on his mind. These he arranged in paragraphs and numbered them. I found this very helpful. I would read one paragraph and think about it. There may be others who may have a similar problem. I do not know. But my children certainly have. I sincerely feel this will help them.

The Bhagvad Gita has been arranged into 365 thoughts; one for each day. It is my hope that at a convenient time one thought is read and that thought is kept in the mind for the period. Whenever one has a break one thinks of it.

I believe that the Bhagvad Gita is a book with a solution to all our problems. However, as generations pass the problems take on new garbs. The solutions also have to be presented in new garments to suit the times. That does not mean juggling with the eternal truths. Much has been done in this direction. Noteworthy being Gandhiji's understanding and practice of the teachings of the Bhagvad Gita. Many of his co-workers, such as Mahadev Desai, Jamnalal Bajaj, Morarji Desai, Swami Kedarnath, Ghanshyamdas Mashruwala, Kaka Kalelkar and many other learned men have given us their interpretations. Thus enriching the field of Gita study. One more effort, how small it may be, may be of some help to someone. I do apologise for the short comings.

We are Hindus, and as such we have to present to our children the fact that as the other religions in our country, the Christians have a Bible, the Moslems have the Holy Quran; we as Hindus have our Bhagvad Gita. Unless we are united on this point, we will surely lose out. We do have a lot of scriptures, but the youth demands a positive approach. Being a small community, we dare not ignore the situation. The reading of this ought to give us a brief outline of what Gita has to say.

May the Lord be our guide.
