THOUGHT A DAY GITA - SEPTEMBER

st The three Gunas (qualities). Sattva (activity) Tamas (inert Gunas (qualities), Sattva, (Purity) Rajas, Tamas (inertia) of Pakriti (Nature) keeps Purush (Soul) bound to the body.

nd Sattva being of light and wellbeing brings forth happiness and knowledge. It becomes a subtle bondage.

rd Rajas arises from desires and attachments. It being achieved, man, under its influence is driven to activities, which in turn will give happiness and unhappiness.

th Tamas arises from ignorance. It envelops man in delusion, dullness, lack of interest, and is the source of bondage and suffering.

th Briefly we have bondage of happiness from Sattva, bondage of activity from Rajas, and bondage of dullness, ignorance, and suffering from Tamas.

th No man is under the influence of One Guna only. Where there is a body all three Gunas prevail, suppressing any two. The one that predominates, is said to be in control.

th When Sattva predominates, then all organs are bright and in full bloom. He is on an upward move. 8th When Rajas predominates, then man is full of greed, and all types of activities are embarked upon. The end result will always be unhappiness. The man's bondage increases.

th When Tamas predominates, then inertia, ignorance, dullness, laziness, delusion and such increases. Man is then like an animal. He gets more into it and suffering results.

th Those influenced by Sattva move upwards, those by Tamas downwards, those by Rajas although in volved in many activities, remain unbenefited.

th One who has transcended these three Gunas, is free od from birth, death and pain.

th The Gunas affect the body. One who can keep his mind untainted, he is free. He will not be influenced by the Gunas.

th A Gunatit (one beyond the qualities) is shown as: He is steady in pleasures and pain. His support is the Self. A piece of earth, a stone or a lump of gold are alike to him. He is firm in censure and praise. 14th The Gunatit is the same in honour and dishonour. He is alike to friends and foes. Abandoning all undertakings, he is never bound in bondage. He is serving the Lord and will surely reach the Supreme. 15th The world, as a Peepal tree, (sacred fig) should be pruned by non-attachment and prime mover of all, the Lord should be sought for.

th Those who are free from pride, delusion, attachment, desires, pleasures and pains, they reach the eternal goal.

th After reaching that goal man does not have to be born again.

th It is a degree of that great Supreme that has born as the soul, which attracts the mind and organs of Nature. The deluded do not know this, but the wise do.

th The Yogi (a spiritual disciplinarian) knows the one dwelling within. Those who have no spiritual not know Him.

th The light residing in the sun and the moon, is the light of God. It is He that has become the moon and nourishes the herbs. Becoming the God of fire, He digests the food of living beings.

st Memory, knowledge, and their absence is because of Him. He dwells within all.

nd There are three aspects of the divine. The perishable, the imperishable, and the Supreme.

rd The perishable is the whole universe of changing name and forms.

th The imperishable is the energy of the Supreme, also known as Maya Shakti-Illusory Power. It is the seed from which the perishable takes its birth.

th The imperishable is not imperishable in relation to the Supreme. For, when the knowledge of the Supreme dawns it also vanishes. It is imperishable in relation to worldly matters.

th The Supreme is distinct from these two. It is eternal, pure, intelligent and free by nature. It is He who should be known.

th Two types of beings are described in the Gita. Daivi-Devine and Asurah-Diamonical. The Daivi lifestyle results in liberation, the Asurah gives bondage.

th The Daivi type is fearless, pure of heart, life arranged with devotion and knowledge.

th The Daivi has control of senses, charity, sacrifice for the fellow beings, scriptural studies, austerity and straightforwardness.

th The Daivi practises non-Injury, truth, absence of anger, renunciation, peacefulness, absence of 11.9 crookedness compassion for all, covetousness, gentleness, modesty and absence of fickleness. 31st The Daivi is full of vigour, forgiveness, fortitude, purity and the absence of hatred and pride. In whom these are present, salvation, success and peace are guaranteed.
