Producers of Indian music for the present and the next generation of the 21st century.

Chandu and Hemant Mattani, father and son, guru and shishya have imbibed music for past few decades. Their love of Indian music and its healthy continuity in all its evolving forms have led them to produce numerous multifaceted albums in the Indian regional languages of Gujarati and Hindi. They have now added instrumental and meditation music to their repertoire of collection.

Realising a crucial gap in the field of Indian music, particularly between the popular and serious classical, Sona Rupa has ventured to plug and bridge this with music that retains the light classical raga structure yet draws together the modern elements of western and traditional Indian instruments.

Sona Rupa has successfully showcased this with its first foray in the world market with 'Divinity a musical odyssey'. This combination of the modern with the traditional has found instant affinity, both with the uninitiated young and the old alike. Equally, devotional and folk music, both instrumental and vocal are presented in unique, thematic formats for a complete musical experience.

Musical roots

In the early days, Sona Rupa was known to specialise in devotional, and regional (Gujarati) music. Thereafter it lead a revolution in trying to show the world the rich and varied musical forms found in India.

Aware that a lot of Indian music these days tends to mimic western forms, music producer Hemant Mattani wanted to music that was relaxing and soothing, and deeply traditional. He recorded the first classical collection, Divinity, with leading vocalist-conductor Ashit Desai-assistant music director and man who provided vocals for Attenborough's epic film Gandhi, Hemant brought together the cream of Indian musicians, including flute players Rakesh Chaurasia and Rupak Kulkarni. The collection also incorporates an array of other Indian instruments like the sitar, tabla and santoor.

Thereafter various other have been added and the collection stretches to ten. In addition there is a variety of classical, devotional, folk and meditation music to suit every taste.

Hemant's idea was hugely successful, and this encouraged Hemant to release many more thematic and devotional albums totalling 150 now - these albums are distributed and marketed by Times Music India. It  seems that Hemant is now exporting true Indian music to India.
