Music is Divinity

MUSIC IS DIVINITY. IT ORIGINATES FROM THE ARABIC WORD “MAUSIQI” WHICH MEANS “SOFT RYTHMIC RIPPLES FROM HEAVEN”

Poet Raghupati Sahay “Firaq” Gorakhpuri writes

Mutrib se kaho iss andaaz se gaye Please ask the singer to sing in a way

Har dil ko lage chot si Every heart should feel hurt

Har aankh bhar aye Every eye must be tearful

Mutrib (Arabic ) means singer, songster, minstrel, musician

Music is the most distilled form of noise of the universe. What can’t be said should be sung. When music is played it creates a harmony – cosmic harmony. Our universe hinges on harmonious motion. Music keeps this harmony alive, active and forever awake. The nature of music is such that it has a therapeutic effect on the collective consciousness.

THE POWER OF MUSIC
Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitation of the soul; It is one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.
Martin Luther – German priest and scholar (1483-1546)

Music has a calming effect on the human mind giving inward peace and purifying the soul. The pleasure gained from listening to music is difficult to explain. When a musician plays his instrument the atmosphere is completely filled with melodies and harmony.

Music is related to life. When a baby is born the mother sings soothing lullabies and throughout childhood; music also plays an important part in lessons and acts of worship in schools. We sing at marriage celebrations and a funeral. Every culture has its own distinctive music listened to and enjoyed by all.

Music has the effect of making us forget our worries, sorrow, suffering and tension. Tests have shown that it has a positive effect on hospital patients.

An example of the power of music is when Lord Krishna (in Lila, the devotional play) played tunes on his flute in the forest. Peace, bliss and love were all around when he played and his music captivated the hearts of the gopis (milkmaids) making them fall in love with him. They completely forgot about their husbands , children and family , only wishing to be with Lord Krishna. It is written that even the trees, shrubs, flowers and leaves, birds and animals surrendered to the captivating music of the flute.

Gulzar said he wrote the lines “Naam goom jayeega, chehra badal jaayega, meri awaaaz hi pehchan hai . . . gar yaad rahe” with me in mind. And I feel he expressed my emotions perfectly. LATA MANGESKAR
