Shivaji Maharaj's name comes from the local Goddess Shivai, who blessed his mother by granting her prayers for a son. This is why he is known as Shivaji Maharaj.

In 1870, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule started celebrating Shivaji Jayanti after finding Shivaji Maharaj's tomb in Raigad in 1869, about 100 miles from Pune. Bal Gangadhar Tilak made these celebrations more popular in 1894. Shivaji Jayanti is celebrated with a lot of pride and excitement in Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj promoted the use of regional languages such as Marathi and Sanskrit in his court and administration, surpassing the prevailing standard language of Persian.
